Happy New Year - Thaddeus

Happy New Year! Another trip around the sun completed, another set of seasons logged on the books and another set of hopes and goals for the New Year. There is something significant about entering a new year that brings out the most optimistic side of people and companies. For our farm, going into the new year happens to be a slow period of time that allows us the time to plan and get excited about the spring and summer to come.

In the midst of all the holiday excitement, Moyra and I announced our engagement to be married sometime next fall. My brothers and I have been busy in the relationship department in the last year. Freeman and Carol got married last summer, Noah and Camille got engaged this winter and now Moyra and I – there must be something in the water. It is exciting for all of us and my aunt Delia is particularly excited because we are now bringing females to the family events that were previously dominated by males – the guy-to-girl ratio of our family is beginning to even out!

Despite all this holiday fanfare, the farm goes on. Chris is carefully selecting the seed varieties that we will plant next year. I am putting together a plan of how we will irrigate everything – which includes a list of additional equipment and sprinkler pipe needed. The crew continues to harvest the chards, kale, leeks, carrots and winter greens that are holding strong in the field, while Noah continues to sell them.

The weather has been windy, cold and clear. Cold is a relative term and in this case it is cold for California, which isn’t anything to complain about compared to Alaska this time of year. The wind is nice because it blows all the air pollution from the Sacramento Valley somewhere else, leaving our farm with a rare view of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range far in the distance. I get used to the junk in the air - which makes me really appreciate the few really clear days we get every year.
