May Farm Tour Photos / Farm Work Day Info

February 22 , 2006

It has been cold this week. Ironic, considering the spring weather we have had the last couple of weeks. That is one of the first and most important lessons of farming - if you don't like the weather, wait and it will change, and if you like the current weather, don't count on it sticking around. The past four mornings all the dew in the air has been freezing to whatever physical object it can set on. The roofs to all of the buildings start the morning off icy white. As the sun emerges from the hills the frost turns to melted ice and rolls of the roof leaving a wet mark on the ground were all the water converges.

Ricardo and I spent the weekend working on updating our packing facilities. More specifically we installed the drain across the road for the washing area. This is one of those jobs that had to be done on a Sunday because there is way too much traffic to complete it Monday thru Saturday. With the drain in, the next step is to get the forms set to pour the concrete. I am hoping to have that done this week and with any luck we should have everything done by the first weekend in March.

The 91st annual Capay Valley Almond Festival is this Sunday, February 26th. Every year, all the towns in the Capay Valley come alive with festivities. There is an antique car show in Madison. Esparto has the bulk of the events, starting with the Esparto Future Farmers of America (FFA) breakfast which leads into the full crafts fair in the Esparto Park. Further up the valley there is the big rib BBQ in Guinda and a few other activities. If you have never been, you should consider making your way up for it. In addition to all the festivities you can enjoy the Almond trees showing off all of their flowers.

On a personal note our family is very excited to be getting my older brother, Che, back this weekend. For the past three months he was serving as the Senior helicopter pilot on the United States Coast Guard Cutter Mellon. They started in San Diego and headed south to patrol the waters from Mexico to South America. Aside from a few brief weekends in port and of course helicopter trips off the boat, Che has been on that ship for too long to count. It will be fun to see him and get caught up on all the family and farm events that have taken place (he missed Christmas, his birthday and New Years).

Enjoy your box this week and hope with us that the weather gets warm again! Thaddeus
