The Almond Festival occupied the Capay Valley last weekend. Every year the big question revolves around what the weather will be like for the event. The best Almond Festival celebrations occur when the festival corresponds to one of nature’s early spring day gifts. With the grass green, the almond blossoms brilliant, blue sky and sun-shine, it is easy to find a reason to take a trip to the Capay Valley. This year, the day before the Almond Festival (Saturday) was warm and clear - but Sunday was met with clouds and water.
The weather never stops the festivities - it just slows them down a bit. The Esparto High School FFA (Future Farmers of America) Club puts on an omelet and pancake breakfast in the school gym that we always attend. This year was no different - it is fun to see the locals and chat with them about what everyone is up to and how the farm is doing. Our family hosted a small get together at the farm for some friends, we had BBQ and made a fire to keep warm.
One side of me was sad the rain came to slow done the festival but the farmer in me was relieved to know that our little plants are getting something to drink and the seeds that Ricardo put in the ground just before the end of the week are getting the shot of water they need to initiate their life. The next question is to wonder about how much rain we will get.
Last week was a gift of sunshine and dry soil. We got the John Deere 4500 tractor back from the shop just in time to put the mower on in and put it to work mowing the grapes and citrus orchards. The first tomato planting ground was disked, ripped and put into beds last week. They are now awaiting the first tomato transplants that will come in the middle of March. The rain is getting the weeds a chance to start growing which is great because we will be able to cultivate them in just before we transplant the tomatoes into the ground.
The farm moves on, the seasons change and our lives adjust to the activity of the day.
Enjoy your box this week. - Thaddeus |
