It almost feels as like we got a month of spring weather in February in exchange for heavy rains, wind and cold in March. Typically we expect spring officially to begin on March 10th – at least this is the target planting date for our spring crops. However, if it is too wet to get the tractor in the field, obviously spring, for all practical purposes, is delayed. Despite the rains and wind the fruit trees are on track in their blossoming – it is amazing how vibrant and pink the little flowers on peach trees are. They truly are a bright glimpse foreshadowing the spring weather that is just around the corner.
The farm dog Bear is old enough to begin enjoying some of the finer things in a dog’s life – chasing rabbits. This week I was walking with him through the strawberry patch and a jackrabbit jumped about ten feet away and took off bounding away from us as fast as his legs could hop him away. Bear didn’t even stop to think and took off as fast as his awkward little legs could carry him in hot pursuit of the rabbit. Of course the rabbit left Bear in the dust, but now Bear recognizes the rabbit’s smell when walking around the farm. When he catches it his nose gets stuck to the ground, his tail starts wagging and he picks up his pace to a jog as he zigs and zags side-to-side trying to find the source of the newly associated smell. The life of a dog on a farm would be pretty fun.
The greenhouse at my grandfather’s is filled with new transplants. There are two themes up there at the moment: summer squash and herbs. We have four different summer squashes that are just beginning to push their little leaves above the soils surface. We also have a selection of perennial herbs that include: Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano, Chives, Tarragon, Lemon balm and Fennel. We have a small patch of land earmarked for our herb garden and we are looking forward to being able to include a mixed bag of fresh herbs in every weeks box.
Enjoy your box this week and do a dance for spring weather. - Thaddeus |
