Migratory Birds and this Crazy Rain - Thaddeus

I keep waking up in the hopes that the weather we have been having is a bad dream. To a farmer the rain goes far beyond simply meaning that you still need to wear rain gear in April. It means that you are forced to sit on your hands at a time of the year when you are usually bustling with activity. The baby tomato and squash transplants that are ready to go into the field are sitting in the greenhouse. The crew is only able to work a couple days a week. In short, it’s like winter came in April!
Needless to say, the selection of local produce is dwindling. The winter crops are about finished and the spring crops have not been given a chance to get planted or to grow. In years past we would be looking forward to the farm’s first strawberries and already would be enjoying the bright colors and smells of the Sweet Pea Flowers. Spring and summer will come, I am sure, and when they do we will be more than happy to receive them.
The work day this weekend will be fun, a bit wet and muddy but we will make do. The tentative project is to spend the day weeding the one year old lavendar plants. If you will be attending, please bring raingear and cloths that you don’t mind getting muddy - that is most likely what will happen.
The rain has kept the hills green. There is also a pair of Mallard ducks that have been making a living out the numerous puddles on the farm. I think they are the same pair that were on the farm last year. They have been staying in the same spot and they react the same way when I walk close enough to roust them out of their puddle (often time they are in the irrigation canal). They make lots of noise as they become airborn and then they fly a large circle around, returning to take a look at me and what I am doing in their environment. It is fun knowing the land and wildlife of a farm well enough to develop some type of relationship with the migratory animals.
Enjoy your boxes this week - Thaddeus
