Radishes with Aioli - Thaddeus

The weather has broken up enough to permit us to work in the fields with equipment for the first time since February. We have been busy getting all of our transplants in the ground. This past week we transplanted tomatoes, summer squash and eggplant. It is good to begin getting things growing for the summer – even if it is the end of April.

We picked our first bunch of sweet pea flowers this past week. I am hoping that we are able to have an abundant display of the sweet smelling flowers at the farmers markets this weekend. We have been working on getting the strawberry field cleaned up. The weeds between the two beds of berries had grown to be quite tall so we went through the field with a weed-eater and cut them down. Now that things are drying up a bit we should be able to get into that field with a tractor to begin cultivating the rows.

The vineyard of grapes has finally started to grow. Their lush green leaves have emerged from the dark vines that have been dormant for so long. It is amazing to see how quickly the grapes grown in the spring, an inch a day at least and sometimes more. We also have small vineyard in the front garden to the house. This is where Freeman and Carol will be getting married in May. The trellis we had there was old and needed replacing, so I agreed to put in a new one. Progress is being made, I have the holes dug and all the materials here. This week we will make a big push to get it done, there is a bit of urgency to get it installed before the grapes get too big.

Last weekend Che, Moyra and I attended a Slow Food Yolo event. We had donated carrots and radishes, which were used in a beautiful display aside aioli. It’s fun to see our produce presented by others. And the aioli tasted great with the raw veggies.
