Honoring Immigrants - Thaddeus

The issue of immigrants in the United States has politically come to a head in the past few weeks. It is a difficult situation, one with many different perspectives, emotions and opinions and the reality is that every point of view is right in its own way. There are also many facts that surround the relationship between the United States and the people who make it run. The truth is that there is a huge work force of immigrants that provide a daily service to everyone in the nation - the question is: how many people in the nation realize this?
There are several industries that are dependent on the reliable work force of immigrants in this nation - agriculture is one of them. As a farmer this is a fact that I have been aware of all my life. Regardless of if you farm organically or conventionally, the business requires a team of hard working individuals to do the work. Capitalism and social factors have created an environment in which the people that do this work are new immigrants.
Two families immediately come to mind when considering this issue. It can be argued that these two families are the reason that our farm is still here and functioning. It is also a fact that they are the reason Farm Fresh to You boxes get packed every week.
These people started working for my parents on this farm before I was old enough to understand the concept of immigration. Both families moved from Mexico in search of a better life and this farm was able to provide that to them in exchange for reliable help. Over the course of the past twenty years all of the members of these families have become legal citizens. The parents have raised good children, some of whom work on this farm and one who is a Marine for the United States Military.
It is important to realize that people are people, regardless of what part of the world they come from. There are good hard working people and there are malicious people who are looking for something for nothing. No group or race of people can be labeled as one or the other. As a nation we need to realize that there are genuine hard working people who have an opportunity for a better life in the United States and we should provide a way for them to realize that opportunity.
While one Farm News is too short to elaborate on this issue fully, I propose that we honor the new immigrants of our country, their hard work and determination. They have simply come to the United States, searching for opportunities that their natal countries could not provide, just as my great-grandparents and your ancestors, however distant, did.
Thank you for supporting our farm and the families who work on it, Thaddeus
