| It's Getting Hot Out Here - Thaddeus |
I spent Sunday in the creek - which really seemed to be the only way to combat the heat. Every year when the strength of summer arrives in Capay I always daydream about the cool San Francisco breeze. Some people love the heat and fortunately some plants love the heat too. Every plant on the farm is transpiring water as fast as we can get it to them.
We are working to get all of the ground prepped for our fall and winter crops. This week we will begin putting plastic out to solarize the ground for winter crops. Solarization is a weed control method. Here is how it works: you disk the ground and make beds early in the summer. You then put sprinklers on the ground and get the top 18-24 inches of the soil soaked with water. As soon as the beds dry up enough to get the tractor out there you cover the top of the beds with a thin layer of plastic. Over the next six weeks the combination of the sun beating down on the moist beds that are covered with clear plastic will raise the soil temperature to a point that will kill all of the weed seeds in the top of the soil. When we are ready to plant our own seeds, we will take the plastic off and seed the bed. If the solarization is successful, the only thing that will grow are the seeds that we planted.
This week we are also beginning to harvest our green beans - they are delicious! I think we will be able to include them in the boxes for the next few weeks. We made a green bean pasta salad this weekend and it was great! (If you steam them for a salad, be sure to not overcook them! They're great al dente, with a crunch.) The tomatoes are almost here as well - the crew started harvesting last weekend. There were a handful of boxes and we are optimistic that we will be able to ship them to you in the next few weeks. It takes time for the bulk of the fruit to ripen. I'm excited for a summer full of fresh tomato salads…
Peppers, eggplant and melons are all growing but still a few weeks away from being ready. The melons this week are coming from an organic farm south of San Luis Obispo. Our peaches and nectarines will be in your box for the next couple of weeks. Be sure to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen…and eat your veggies!
Enjoy your boxes this week - Thaddeus |

Customer Work Day Update
Our next "work day" in the city will be held on Sunday, April 30th. Join us for the Grand Opening of our new retail location in the SF Ferry Building!
Festivities begin at 3pm.
Please email: noah@farmfreshtoyou.com to
reserve space for you, family and friends.
Plan on
arriving at the farm early in the morning, as close to 8am
as possible, and bringing a lunch
to enjoy out in the orchard.
We'll plan on wrapping things up around noon due to the heat,
and you'll be free to relax in the shade of the trees and
have lunch afterward.
