Bear and Deer Meet- Thaddeus

Last week the farm dog Bear learned his role as a domesticated little dog on a farm with wild animals. In the citrus orchard there was a deer fawn and mother enjoying the shade of the citrus trees. Mark and Bear were in the orchard fixing some sprinklers. Bear saw the two deer; as he always does he went over to investigate and ended up chasing the fleeing “toys”. It didn’t take long for the deer’s maternal instincts to kick in and decide to put Bear on the defensive. After chasing Bear a bit and trying to kick him, Bear retreated in a hurry towards the truck. When he got to the truck all the doors were closed - in his state of panic he was able to jump into the cab of the truck through the open window. Now when Bear sees a deer he looks at the deer, looks back at whomever is with him to make sure he has some back-up, then half-heartedly chases the animal. I think that lesson will stick with him for life.
This week we started harvesting the lavender. We have two varieties Provonce and Grosso. The crew is harvesting them into bundles as large as a handful. We have a dark room set up where the bunches of flowers will be put upside down to dry before they are packaged and sent to the Capay Organic store in the Ferry Building for sale. The bees on the farm are enjoying the flowers also. I am beginning to associate the beatiful bushes of fragrant flowers with the buzzing of bees.
Our row crops have set their roots and are on the way. You are receiving the first of our summer squash in your box this week. The plants are still relatively small, as the summer goes on they will get larger and the amount of squash will increase. The green beans are looking great. They have just finished flowering. The flowers are falling off and leavng behind a green bean that is about half an inch long. It is fun to look at the little guys and realize in the next couple of weeks they will grow to be nearly 50 times larger than they are now. I have been pleasantly surprised that the deer have not been a problem in the green beans this year - you never know what animal is going to decide to enjoy the local produce.
