Cherry Tomatoes - Thaddeus

It appears the weather has made a fairly-official turn for summer. The past few weeks had been unusually cool for the beginning of June. This past weekend it was hot, the kind of hot that you can feel deep down. While I tend to prefer the more cool weather the crops have reacted quite nicely to the summer heat and it is our job to keep their thirst for water quenched.
The crew found the first few boxes of cherry tomatoes this week. They are very sweet. We are fighting for the little gems with the deer, and the deer seem to be winning. That is part of the game when farming in areas with wildlife - they take what they want and we get the rest! This isn’t exactly true, we have been making more frequent trips out to the fields to see if we can keep them out of the tomatoes - but in general it is difficult to keep a deer out of its own home.
Chris and I are thinking about the fall and winter squash. It looks like the big winners are: Butternut, Delicata, Acorn, Kabocha and Sugar Pie pumpkins. This week we are making a push to get the ground ready for these crops as well as the first transplanting of leeks and the solarization for the winter greens. We are always trying to stay one step ahead of the season we are in - it is a full- time job.
The citrus trees look nice, they have fruit about the size of a marble and all of the sweet-smelling white blossoms are now only memories of the spring. The figs look like they should be ready soon and of course the heirloom tomatoes are on their way but were held up by late showers this year.
Enjoy your box this week - Thaddeus
