Heirlooms and Heat - Thaddeus

We are busy doing a little bit of everything on the farm these days. The tomatoes, squash, basil, summer squash, eggplant and cucumbers need to be harvested every day. Another crew is transplanting the baby leek plants into the ground that will be shipped during the fall. The peppers, asparagus, melons and baby eggplant are in desperate need of hoeing - this will start as soon as there is a free crew. We are also getting ready to begin the seeding of the fall crops. What a bustle of activity!

We are suffering through the second serious heat wave of the year - 110 degrees. I just don’t operate at that temperature. The only thing that keeps me going is walking into the cold room, closing my eyes and imagining that I am standing on the Golden Gate Bridge with arms spread out, looking out to the Pacific and catching its cool breeze on the way into San Francisco. I imagine that some days when I am in the cold room some San Franciscan is cuddling into a blanket wishing they were melting in the dry Capay heat.

While the afternoons are unbearably hot - they make for gorgeous evenings. The heat settles into a comfortable warmth complemented by a breeze. Sleeping is perfectly comfortable with nothing more than a sheet and a fan blowing the outside air in through an open window.

Heirloom Tomato Tasting
Slow Food Yolo County and Farm Fresh to You will be hosting an
Heirloom Tomato Tasting on our farm in Capay this month. The event
will be Saturday, July 29th; 6:30pm for the formal tomato tasting and
7:30pm for dinner. Tickets and details about the event are available
at www.slowfoodyolo.com. All proceeds will be used to send
delegates from South Africa to Slow Food International's Terra Madre
2006, a food fair and farming conference hosted in Turin, Italy.

Customer Work Day Update

Our next "work day" in the city will be held on Sunday, April 30th. Join us for the Grand Opening of our new retail location in the SF Ferry Building!
Festivities begin at 3pm.

Plan on arriving at the farm early in the morning, as close to 8am as possible, and bringing a lunch to enjoy out in the orchard.
We'll plan on wrapping things up around noon due to the heat,
and you'll be free to relax in the shade of the trees and
have lunch afterward.
