Golden Hills - Thaddeus

This past week I have been noticing the hills that surround the farm. Despite the many shades of colors the hills follow through the seasons - this is the way I always remember them. They are golden yellow with dry grass. Puffs of green oak trees texture the landscape and give the sun a reason to lay dark shadows across the terrain. In the spring, when the hills are lush with green grass, the thought of “the hills” is always golden with green trees. Perhaps it is because the summer is so defined and hot that these memories are burned into my mind.
The crew finished transplanting the first set of baby leeks. They are in the ground being treated for the heat with a shower of water ever other day. They look a little shocked to be in this weather, many of them are laying down or slightly tipped to the right or left. It will be a week or so before their little roots set into their new home long enough to find the energy to push the rest of the plant upwards - beginning their march to adulthood.
We have started harvesting tomatoes every day. The heirlooms are not yet here but they are close. The cherry tomatoes have started as well as the slicing tomatoes. The last planting of tomatoes is about a foot tall now, this week we will begin putting in stakes and tying the tomatoes up with twine. Tomato season is almost here and it, like the dry hills of summer, has a lasting impression on the farm no matter what time of the year.
Ricardo is on the tractor getting the field ready that we will plant our winter squash in to. The fall plantings are about to begin. First it will be the summer squash then a round of carrots, chard, kale, lettuces and spinach will go into the soil. It is hard to imagine that in three months we will already be thinking about Thanksgiving. The seasons come and go so quickly.

Enjoy your boxes this week. Summer is here and you can expect to see tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash and basil in every box for the next few weeks. Just around the corner are our melons, eggplant and heirloom tomatoes. -Thaddeus
