Slow Food - Thaddeus |
We had our Heirloom Tomato Tasting on the farm last weekend with Slow Food Yolo. It was great; about 120 people attended and were able to try 13 different types of local heirloom tomatoes. Five of the varieties were set up so people were able to score the tomatoes based on smell, taste and texture. I have not yet seen the results, but I am looking forward to seeing how people described each of the unique tomatoes.
The tasting was followed by a dinner of roasted chicken, bell peppers, fresh goat cheese, tomatoes and fresh basil. Fortunately, the weather cooperated and provided a beautiful summer evening. People began to leave when the sun went down.
You are receiving heirloom tomatoes in your box this week! If everything cooperates you should have these until the fall weather brings the rain. It was such a late year for the tomatoes - here it is the first week of August and we are just beginning to see them!
Chris and I are arranging our fall planting. We are looking at what land we have available and penciling out how much of the kale, chards, carrots, winter greens, winter squashes and leeks we want to sell. Some of the seed we need is in the garage and the rest we'll need to order. Ricardo has been working to get all the ground ready. Now we just need to figure out how to get water from the canal to the seeds. Aluminum sprinkler pipe this time of year is in very high demand and it will be difficult to keep water on everything with what little pipe we have.
Our tour for the farm is just around the corner - August 19th at 9:30am on the farm. We look forward to seeing you then!

Farm Tour Update
Saturday, August 19th we will be opening the farm up for a tour. Mark your calendars, tell your friends and be ready for the heat. This event is exclusively for our Farm Fresh to You customers, their family and friends. A tour of the farm will start at 9:30am. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy the shade of our yard in the afternoon. We will provide fresh tomatoes to add to your sandwiches and salads, drinks and fresh fruit snacks.

Plan on arriving at the farm early in the morning, as close to 8am as possible. There will be actvities and walks planned for the whole family.
