Tomato Storys - Thaddeus |
The intense summer heat has died down; the evenings are composed of a cool fall breeze carrying the smell of the freshly irrigated fields. This weather is much more satisfying than the blazing summer heat. I think the crops like it better too. The day still approaches the triple digit numbers but the evening provides a nice break.
We are planting our fall crops. The winter squash is getting its first shot of water. Ricardo is seeing kale, chard and beets. Chris and I are scheming to buy some new sprinkler pipe in order to have the equipment needed to irrigate a nice selection of fall greens. When we look to buy aluminum irrigation pipe I always wonder how many cans it takes to make one pipe and, if in fact, any of those pipes used to be old soda cans.
My grandpa's citrus orchard has no crop. This is the time of year when one can make a pretty good assessment of this winter's citrus crop. The lemons and orange trees on our farm have a fair crop. My grandfather's citrus trees literally have nothing. I suppose the late spring is all that it can be attributed to - this has never happened before.
Our tomatoes are moving right along. Yesterday there was a Kestrel sitting on top of one of the tomato stakes looking into the field in hopes of finding dinner. He didn't pay much attention to me despite the fact I was fairly close to him. I think an organic farm would be a fine place for a raptor to live - all the fields have everything to provide a healthy eco-system for every aspect of the food chain.

Farm Tour Update
Saturday, August 19th we will be opening the farm up for a tour. Mark your calendars, tell your friends and be ready for the heat. This event is exclusively for our Farm Fresh to You customers, their family and friends. A tour of the farm will start at 9:30am. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy the shade of our yard in the afternoon. We will provide fresh tomatoes to add to your sandwiches and salads, drinks and fresh fruit snacks.
