Cools Coming - Thaddeus |
Sept 13 , 2006
The word on the street is that the weather is supposed to take a turn towards cool this week. Every time I hear about significant weather changes I take a moment to decide how I feel about it – as if I have some say in the matter. The predicted cooler weather should be okay. Many of our fall crops have been seeded and they will be fine. However, I wish we had managed to plant our winter squash quite a bit earlier. They are still relatively small and the brisk weather won’t allow them to grow as fast as we would like. The last tomato planting is about as big as it is going to be but the fruit is still green. The tomatoes are at the stage where in 100-degree weather they would be ripe in a few days but with 70-degree weather it could take a few weeks.
We have been very busy getting the weeding in the new crops done. The leeks, kale, chard, green beans and winter squash all needed a once over with a hoeing crew to go through and get the weeds between the plants that the tractor missed. I like watching the crew work down the row. When they start there is a strip of green – it looks like grass. As they move down the row they remove the green blanket that was hiding the crop and where they have been is brown dirt with a very organized set of plants. Hoeing is a lot of work – thousands of hours are spent on this project.
There is a family of deer that have moved into the orange orchard. This is odd because as long as I have lived on this farm I have never seen any deer in that particular orange orchard. Generally the deer stay in the hills or in the thicket by the creek and they don’t cross the highway or the canal. Regardless of the fact that this orchard is between the highway and the canal, some mother must have figured it would make a nice home. We catch glimpses of her and the baby as they navigate around the farm.
The painters are coming this week to paint the packing shed and the barn. I can’t remember the last time these buildings were painted. They are due for a makeover; another winter of being exposed to pounding water would cause damage. I am looking forward to getting the job done – it will make the place look much better.
Enjoy your boxes this week and notice that are taking a turn into the fall. Thaddeus
