We have a piece of property near the creek, which happens to be the portion of the farm that has the highest population of wildlife. Ricardo was working that field with various tractor implements last week preparing the ground for our spring tomato planting. When he was done there were distinct beds and furrows cultivated into the bare dirt – which is typically what a field looks like when the tractor work is done.

The day after Ricardo had finished I took a walk with the dogs to this general area of the farm. When approaching the field I noticed it looked black and alive with small creatures covering the ground. As we got closer the black dots on the ground exploded into a flock of turkeys exiting the location. It was amazing to experience a flock of over one hundred turkeys taking flight. The air vibrated with the sound of the stubby wings beating to defy gravity for the rest of their bulky bodies.

If you have never seen a wild turkey take flight, it is something that you should try to witness. The action is anything but graceful and should be referenced as a motivational fact; turkeys flying are proof that you can do anything you set your mind to. The amount of energy they need to put their bodies into flight justifies the fact that they spend most of their life on the ground running from prey and resorting to flight only when absolutely necessary.

The reason that all the turkeys were in the field was because Ricardo’s tractor work on that piece of land created the best place for turkeys to eat within a couple miles of the farm. I imagine it was all the bugs, maybe some seeds were made available too. After the turkeys fled the scene I was amazed to notice that the hundreds of turkey feet scratching around left huge sections of the field completely flat – erasing the tractor work that Ricardo previously completed. I have seen many things on this farm, but a flock of turkeys leveling a bedded field was a first.
