Summer Food Please - Thaddeus |
I was realizing the other day that I am ready for the change in food that will come with the season’s change to warm weather. I really enjoy winter greens, soups and salads but I think the time has come to switch into something else so that when next fall rolls around I will again be excited about kale, chard, carrots and leeks. I am looking forward to warm summer evenings and a grill sizzling summer squash and eggplant.
Recently I have been foraging through the fields picking greens for dinner and daydreaming about the tomatoes, squashes, cucumbers and melons the same ground will be producing in a few months. Eating with the seasons is enjoyable, a change that we have no control over. At the end of every season I have enjoyed this season’s food and weather and am ready for the next. I guess that is what life is about, enjoying what you have and looking forward to what will come.
My mind has been on summer crops for the past few weeks. Our fields have all been assigned to their summer jobs. The list of work to be done to each field is in my head and the seeds for each field have been purchased. The tomato transplants are on their way, waiting for the middle of March to arrive.
The middle of March is an important date because it is when our operations make the assumption that the risk of getting a frost that would kill summer plants is no longer a worry. This date has come to exist from empirical information; in the years past early March has proven to provide temperatures that have frozen little tomato plants to death.
All farmers have a date specific to their farm, microclimate and past experience. It is a funny little piece of information, something that is handed down from generation to generation. The date is never modified to be earlier in March, it will only get pushed back – the risk of loosing an early summer planting is too dangerous to play with.
Enjoy your boxes this week knowing that we are doing everything in our power to get the spring and summer fruits and vegetables to you as soon as we can. – Thaddeus
