Spring Gobbles - Thaddeus

For the first time this year I fell asleep on top of my bed covers. The evening was warmer than it had been since last fall. My alarm went off rather early as I forgot to adjust the start time for the crew considering the hour shift in the western world. Farming is one profession that starts with the sun regardless of any clock reading and it is supposed to end ten hours after the sun comes up.

Because I was up a little too early I was able to see the world change from dark to light. Surprisingly enough that was not the most striking feature of the morning. The flock of wild turkeys in the alfalfa field were making a huge amount of noise. Gobbling is the word we use for it but turkeys make a gobble-gobble-gobble-gobble sound about 10 times faster than we are able to. The night air seems to carry the sound better or perhaps there are fewer noises to take away from the sounds at night.

It took a few hours but it finally dawned on me that the turkeys were making so much noise because they too know it is spring and mating season is just around the corner. The river of turkey gobbles I heard were the males beginning to show off their sounds for all the ladies. I think turkey behavior in the spring is really fun. Flocks will hang out in the middle of a field, most the group will be picking at little bugs and seeds while a few of the males puff out their stomachs and open their tail feathers while strutting around scrapping their wings on the dirt. It is very impressive how large they can make themselves look and I guess in Turkey World bigger is better.

While the turkeys are getting ready for the mating season we are getting ready to plant our transplants into the ground. Ricardo is disking up the winter grass that has taken over the fields. We are hoping to start transplanting tomatoes this week. Our first spring green bean planting is in the ground and waiting to germinate. If farming were a roller coaster the slow clicking and clacking heading to the top of the ride was the winter and we have just peaked and are starting to head down the fast part – hold on!

Enjoy your box this week. Thaddeus
