An Early Start - Freeman

An Early Start

A beautiful day here on the farm following the beginning of what is sure to be a hectic week. The morning began at 3 am with a call from the farm’s truck heading back from the city. Lorenzo was stuck at the scales due to a broken brake part, sending Thaddeus and I in a scurry to arrange the day. Thad took the trailer to offload the contents of the truck and I headed up to a neighboring farm to pick up the green garlic for this week’s box in the farm’s van. Trouble with the copier last week leaves me thankful that a trip into town has not yet been required, but Thad still needs to arrange a rental vehicle and the repair of the truck. In addition to the normal Monday operations that are underway, this seem to quickly get behind. After days like this I sometimes think back with empathy about the amount of work and dedication that was required of my mother in starting Farm Fresh To You and running the farm. She was just one person doing the bookkeeping, running the farm, raising us boys, and working to connect consumers with the farms that produce their food while providing a more consistent and sustainable farming operation for the crew and office. It makes me smile to think that how we have taken up many of the same battles that she must have constantly dealt with during farming operations.

Looking at the positive side of today the weather is warm, encouraging the seeds and transplants to grow. We had a great fruit set in the peaches and other stone fruit orchard and have almost completed most of the thinning which is required to obtain a decent sized stone fruit. Thad has already applied the first batch of watering to the new stone fruit orchard and the figs and grapes are next on the to-be-watered list. The Satsuma plums that have replaced part of the old Asian pear orchard have a below-average fruit set for this year’s weather. We have concluded that the variety most likely needs a pollinator which we will investigate further and hopefully have planted by next spring. The warm weather, unfortunately, has also been great for the weeds. We are working hard this year to cultivate and hand weed all of the row crop fields in a timely manner to keep the weeds in check. If done properly this will prevent even higher weeding costs and prevent weeds from going to seed, causing future battles.

I hope you enjoy this week’s Farm Fresh To You box, and want to thank you for your support. I hope you can make it to the upcoming farm tour to take place here in Capay on Saturday, April 21 st (next weekend). Please give us a call or email us with an RSVP for you, friends and family and don’t forget to pack a picnic to enjoy in the garden.
