Goslings in the Creek -Thaddeus |
Goslings in the Creek
Jersey Girl (the farm dog) and I were walking down by the creek last week. The Cache Creek borders the farm end of our farm and is the edge of the Capay Valley. Our side of the creek is where we are planting this year’s winter squash; this field is about twenty feet above the creek so walking along its edge gives you a bird’s eye view down into the creek. The other side of the creek rises up into rolling grass hill spotted with huge oak trees and cattle.
As Jersey and I approached the creek two Canadian Geese in the middle of the creek immediately captured my attention. In particular I noticed their long necks sticking up from the water and curving into their heads that looked forward. The geese did not move much, which was interesting because in general you would expect the geese to erupt from their floating down the creek into a furry of flapping wings and feet until they were air born behind a trail of disrupted water. Looking more closely at the two geese I saw their little brown puffs of goslings floating around them. The parents didn’t fly off because their goslings were not yet old enough to earn their wings.
I looked away for moment to see what Jersey Girl was up to. At first glance looking back it appeared that the geese had disappeared. It didn’t take long to find them right were they were previously but the two parent geese had taken their long necks and laid them flat on the water with their heads in front of them. Slowly the parent geese began to “drift” to the other side of the creek. They moved at a speed that was easy for the goslings and slow enough that at a glance they looking like plant material drifting along.
I watched the family of geese until they reached the other side of the creek where they lodged themselves into a group of rocks that were sticking up from the water. Once they got to this point the remained there, perfectly still, appearing as nothing more than an accent on the creek’s terrain.
Jersey Girl and I continued on our walk ending up at the other end of the farm. As we returned back to the farm I passed the same spot to see what the geese were up to. They had moved only slightly. They were now out of the water on the bank in some vegetation, still little balls of camouflage hiding from any possible threats.
The farm is doing well, the wildlife has all of their little babies out. We had a great farm tour this weekend. The crops are thriving, tractors roaring and the irrigation sprinklers are clacking. Summer is here.
