Already Thinking of Fall -Thaddeus |
Already Thinking of Fall
Summer has arrived at the farm. The hills are golden with sun-dried grass and the oak trees have settled into their musty green state that will carry them thru to fall. The farm’s birds are showing off their young that were successfully hidden from local predators. The baby deer have grown out of their white spots and are more accustomed to their long legs and ability to sprint for fun or to flee.
The tomatoes that were planted in the spring are four feet tall and have just started to yield ripe fruit. The eggplant and peppers are close to being ready. The melons have invaded their field with a wave of green growth that has left no inch of brown soil visible – a closer look reveals little yellow flowers and melons like tennis balls but darker green.
Every pump on the farm is working, distributing the life-blood of the crops from the canal to the soil that house the thirsty roots. The size of the crew is slowly growing to handle the added working of harvesting the many crops that the existing crew has been taking care of for the past months.
With all the excitement of summer here, my thought are focused on the fall. The leeks and fennel transplants will be ready to put into the ground in a couple of weeks. Their field needs to be prepared. The kale and chard transplants need a place to be grown, our existing shade-house is full and I this year I do not want to pay Speedling (an organic transplant supplier) to grown them. The winter squash is going to be planted this week – if everything goes according to plan. The seed has not yet arrived and my new seeder has never been used to plant these seeds – there could be a week or more involved in getting the correct equipment to get the job done.
While there is a lot of work yet to be done I have figured out how much of everything we will plant and where it is going to go. The plan is set. let the construction begin.
Enjoy your box this week and thanks for letting our farm grow your food. -Thaddeus
