Ideas for Fall and Winter Crops?

Last week I forced myself to sit down with the maps of all my fields and the list of what we want to grow to develop the landscape that will carry us through the fall, winter and into spring. Sitting in the office allocating fields to crops I realized that now was the time to make any decisions about different things to grow. As people filtered in and out of the office I asked if they wanted anything special – in general everyone’s request had already been put into the planting schedule.

It crossed my mind that now was the time to ask my Farm Fresh to You customers if they had any requests for strange things they wanted to see in their box that they couldn’t find anywhere else. Isn’t that the advantage to buying directly from the farmer; the fact that you can have some influence over the farm’s actions?

Faces of customers flashed into my head who I had met at farm tours or in the Ferry Building, but blanks where drawn when I tried to remember what it was that they requested we grow. In general people who had requested items had come to this area from another area or culture and they were disappointed to realize that a staple from that place was not being produced here.

So here is your chance to get me to grow something specifically for the box that you will be receiving. Email me at Thaddeus@FarmFreshtoYou.com with the subject line “Crop Request” so that I don’t overlook your request as junk mail. Provided that what you are requesting is something I can get the seed for and grow, I would be happy to plant it and include it in our Farm Fresh to You boxes when the crop is ready.

The time to make a request it is right now. The farming machine is a big and slow wheel that churns without much change once it has been set in motion. If nothing else this will be a good exercise for you to try to think ahead to the winter in an effort to remember that special item that you miss ever year; because if you want me to grow it for you I need to know 60-90 days before you want to eat it.
