Fall Planting

Fall Planting

In last week’s Farm News I informed everyone that I was setting up the fall and winter planting schedule and that if there were any requests of specific crops you would like to see us grow please email me at Thaddeus@FarmFreshtoYou.com. I was really pleased with all of the emails I received and wanted to leave the note in here so that our every-other –week customers would get the notice too. If you have something particular you would like us to grow for your box please email it to me. Next week I will let everyone know what how we have adjusted our planting schedule as a result of your requests.

The weather has been very cool but is supposed to warm back up this week. Today Ricardo and I are seeding bok choy, lettuce and chard. Our first plating of carrots has germinated. This is the first time we have planted carrots with our new seeder and Ricardo and I have decided we could have put more seed into the ground. For the next seeding we will adjust the gears on the seeder so that the metering unit drops more seeds per food. Determining the right setting for your seeder takes experience. This stand of carrots is okay but I would have liked to see about twenty percent more of the little carrot plants out there.

Our last planting of heirloom tomatoes is getting close to being ready. We should begin harvesting it this week. It looks good, lots of fruit, very green plants and so far as I can tell there seems to be no problems with fruit quality or bugs in the field. It is amazing how quickly the tomato season goes. Already I am thinking about next year and what I can do different. There are some new varieties I would like to try, a new planting schedule that I think will help even out the production and next year I want to try to develop some harvesting equipment that will make the harvesting more efficient. Those are all good winter projects, right now I need to focus on getting fall seeds into the ground. I feel like I am in college with a huge final bearing down on me that I need to sit and study for. I guess procrastination is something that follows you wherever you go.

Our Satsuma Mandarin crop looks very good this year. The trees are loaded with fruit and are sagging a bit. They are sagging enough that my Grandpa can no longer drive his tractor through the orchard without ripping off tree branches. His orchard was spaced a little too tight between the rows. Now all of our orchards are put four feet wider to insure that we can always get our equipment through it, but when my mom planted Grandpa’s orchard she had no experience and the trees were so small when they were put into the ground.

Enjoy your boxes this week - Thaddeus
