Married in France

Moyra and I returned from France last week – married. Our friends and family invaded the hometowns of Moyra’s mother’s family in the Normandy region of France. It was a true French wedding, complete with the Civil Ceremony at the Mayor’s office of the small village, a religious ceremony in the village church and a reception in the town hall that went until three o’clock in the morning – at which time onion soup was served to everyone that was still there!

The trip was fun, the people were friendly and food was great. The whole visit was a true French experience, complete with kissing on the cheek at every greeting, cheese at every meal and a general train strike that made getting back to the airport more challenging that usual. As much fun as we had it was nice to get back to the farm and see Jersey Girl.

While I was gone the farm made a full transition into fall. The asparagus when from a lush green color to a bright yellow color signifying it is ready to be mowed for the year. The kale and chard that were only six inches tall when I left are now a foot and a half tall and almost ready to harvest. The Satsuma mandarins are getting their orange color and will be ready for harvest soon. The tomato fields have been cleaned up and most of them have been mowed and disked leaving a field with no evidence of the six-foot plants that stood in it for most of the summer.

The rain is now a part of the daily operations of the farm. In the summer it is understood that there will be no rain. This makes two things very obvious; the rain will never stop any tractor work and any water the crops are going to get will be put on by irrigation. With the rain now we need to manage the fact that some times we cannot work because it will be too wet. The other issue is the irrigation canal has closed down. Most of our water has come from the canal but now Ricardo is getting the pump set up to pull water out of the creek. Every fall we transition from the canal to the creek and every spring we transition from the creek back to the canal as soon as the water begins to flow again. I would like to put in a well so that we can be assured of where our water will be coming from all year round.
