Green Festival

A crew of us spent the weekend in San Francisco at the Green Festival fishing for new Farm Fresh to You customers. We were successful and many of our new customers will be starting with this delivery – welcome!

The Green Festival was a pretty big event for a farm boy who doesn’t get out much. After I got over the initial shock of how many people were there I started to settle into what is was that we were doing there. We (Freeman, Carol, Moyra, Tommy, Sara, Yumico, Debbie and myself) were given the unique opportunity to teach people about our farm and our superior method of distributing produce.

My guess is that I personally talked to over one hundred different people about our farm. All of the great things I had to say about the way we farm and all of the good reasons I had for convincing people that they should let our farm deliver produce to their door step went to my head. In fact, I think that our company was the greenest company in the entire festival and I think that our customers are the greenest consumers in the nation. It should be pointed out that “going green” has turned into a pretty big corporate theme, so the competition for being the greenest company wasn’t always that though – our neighbor at the festival was PG&E.

With all of the excitement of the weekend over it is good to be back on the farm. Poor Jersey Girl didn’t get to have as much fun as we did this weekend; she was confined to her kennel and was really excited to see us when we got home. Today she is back into her routine of barking at the one cat on the farm that is not afraid of her.

It is really amusing to watch how into this cat Jersey gets. The cat walks about doing its own thing and Jersey is completely focused on the cat, her hears perked up, tail wagging and hoping that the cat runs. The cat never runs but walks and Jersey makes a huge deal to run around and cut the cat off. The cat keeps walking and stiffs Jersey’s nose; Jersey moves her head away from the cat but her feet stay planted, as if she is making the point that dogs don’t run from cats, even thought maybe sometimes they want to. Then the barking starts which doesn’t bother the cat but makes trying to write farm news in the office a little bit difficult.

The rain was good for the crops this past weekend. We have everything into the ground except for the cover crops and the beans and peas I want to grow for next spring. This year I am putting a block that will be split equally into fava beans, snap peas and shelling peas. However I can’t plant that field until I get the big tractor back from the shop. The big tractor is the best one for pulling beds into fields and it is getting a seal in the transmission replaced. By the end of the week we should be planting peas and beans.

Enjoy your boxes this week - Thaddeus
