Auction Season

This is the last week of Farm Fresh to You deliveries before the New Year (we will not be delivering boxes the week of December 24-28). My favorite part about the end of the year is being able to refer to “next year” the way that one generally refers to “in two weeks.” This little sweet spot in the year is also one that lends to making plans and serious thought about what is to come in the following year.

There are a few additions to the farm that I am now planning. The first is the herb garden, which was planted last week. The piece of land is right next to the office and has received the little rosemary, oregano, thyme, mint and tarragon plants – I don’t know how long they take to be in production but I am hopeful that a handful of fresh herbs soon becomes part of every box.

I am also doing the research to add a full line of potatoes and onions to the production list of the farm. We have done very limited amounts in the past but next year I want to expand the operation to include shallots, red torpedo onions and fingerling potatoes. I don’t know much about growing these things, but the best way to learn is to try. I will be sure to let everyone know how the project progresses.

With new production plans there is a demand for new equipment also, which works out well because winter is the season of auctions. The general idea of an auction is that there is some farmer who is going to stop farming for varying reasons (retiring, going out of business, scaling down the operation). All of the equipment that this farm has accumulated over the life of the farm (which can be a lot) gets lined up in neat rows and auctioned off.

Attending a farm auction is the only way to see all of the farmers of Northern California in the same location. By the looks of all the farmers in the same spot you would think that farmers had standard issue uniforms because they all dress the same (farm equipment auctions are really funny events). The first auction I attended this season was last weekend and our farm purchased a bed shaper and a land plane. I drove to the auction in Moyra’s little Mazda car and I was the only person not driving a truck - I did have a camo ball cap, jeans, a carheart jacket and the standard issue NexTel phone. As soon as I got away from the little car I fit right in.
