| Hot Peppers – A Spiritual Retreat |
| This is the first year I have ever grown hot peppers. Every year, there is a little pressure to grow them. This year, the memory of customers nudging for good hot peppers came at the exact right time – in the middle of winter when I was ordering my pepper seeds. It is always fun to begin the process of finding the best of a new category. My current selection of sweet and bell peppers is the result of years of trialing varieties and keeping the best ones. |
| Six months later, the seeds selected had matured into healthy, green plants spotted with peppers low on the plant and white flowers at the tips of leading growing points. Six different varieties in the field, and I was not sure which plant was what. Kneeling down I selected a long red pepper that must have been the cayenne variety. Nibbling the tip of it, I held my breath in expectation of the worst – it never came. I guessed the jalapeno by its typical shape and took a bite of it – a little more heat. By the end of my nibble session in the field, I had a basket filled with mixed hot peppers and a mouth that was so hot it could not assess how hot each new pepper was. |
| That evening, Moyra and I selected the Padron peppers from my mix. Padron peppers are green, wrinkly and small. We heated up a pan with olive oil and tossed the handful of little gems into the pan. The smell of hot peppers matched the sizzle of the hot oil working on the peppers. After a few minutes, it was time to eat them. I have never eaten a Padron, but have heard that they can be hit and miss - most of them mild and every once in a while one that is supper hot. Like the gentleman I am, I let my wife try the first one. “Not that hot” she observed, reaching for another. |
| With my courage up, I selected one and popped the whole thing into my mouth. Crunching the pepper in my mouth the taste of peppery, salty, olive oil flavor was quickly replaced with a burning like I had never known. My instincts were to spit it all out, but I didn’t. I kept chewing, letting the heat further invade my mouth. Swallowing, I felt the burning follow through to my stomach. That pepper was so hot that all I could do was think about how my mouth was burning – it was the most focused my mind had been in a long time. The burn lasted all evening. |
| Enjoy your boxes this week and beware of the hot peppers – eat them in moderation! – Thaddeus |
