Kimberly Chamberland sold her first veggie burger in 1987, out of her own cafe in the Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver. That was the start. She changed course in 2010, after Kimberly's daughter, Jasmine, was diagnosed with celiac disease and they went looking for options that were not there. Big Mountain reformulated everything, existing products and future ones alike, to be free of the top common allergens. Jasmine joined the company in 2013, and the two have run it together since. Ingredients come from local farmers they know, and the production runs without food waste, with upcycling built into the process. As of 2025, their products are certified glyphosate free. The company is women and family owned.
