These sunflowers will create 4”- 6” heads in velvety maroon with gold accents reaching heights of 6’ - 8’. They are stunning when combined with white flowers in a bouquet. Sunflowers can be started indoors, in cold climates 5 - 7 weeks before last frost or direct sow into the soil after last frost. These sun worshipers require full sun. When planting this annual, start by preparing a planting area, free of weeds and that is well protected. This plant does not require a specific type of soil, but prefers well draining soil and mulch at the base. Plant at about 1/4” deep with a 1” - 6” spacing between seeds.
Originally from North America, the sunflower always points in the direction of the sun, allowing it to capture all the sun’s rays. It represents spiritual faith and worship, since the sunflower loyally follows to face the life-giving rays of the sun. In Chinese lore the sunflower represents long life, good luck, happiness and is considered very auspicious. The yellow hues signify vitality and intelligence. Not certified organic.
About the producer
In the spirit of planting seeds of peace, joy, beauty and food for this world, husband and wife Astrid and Matthew Hoffman created The Living Seed Company in 2011. They believe the power of people growing food together and saving their own seeds is one of the best ways to achieve both inner harmony and global prosperity.
The Living Seed Company is an organic and heirloom seed company dedicated to planting the seeds of World Peace. They are dedicated to preserving the diversity in our food through the distribution and growing of open pollinated seeds and educating about the life affirming art of seed saving.
The Living Seed Company has been breeding vegetables for over seven years and adapting them to the particular climates of the Pacific Coast. Through their breeding projects, they are able to offer seeds that are inherently more adapted while supporting seed diversity. They grow 25% - 30% of their own seed in three different plots all in and around Point Reyes Station, CA. The rest are sourced from farmers, mostly found in California and Oregon. Most of their seed is certified organic, and the methods used are beyond organic requirements. Many of the varieties available are heirloom, meaning they are treasures handed down over generations. All of their seed is non-GMO and neonicotinoid-free. All of the seed they grow is planted, harvested and packed by hand with love.
